CULTIVATION

Process of selection and harvesting

The different varieties of oranges and grapes that we offer are harvested strictly in the optimum periods of collection, having ripened on the trees and vines respectively. Naturally, not all varieties of the fruits are harvested at the same time, and therefore, we collect accordingly to the optimum period of each variety. For this reason, our oranges and grapes have 100% of their qualities intact, and are juicier, sweeter, more flavoursome and contain more vitamins than most commercially sold fruit. Farmers must choose between harvesting when the taste of the fruit is tolerable or waiting until the flavor and sugar are at their optimum level. We take this second approach. The waiting is the tough part, freezing weather or lower market prices can be very harmful. By playing the waiting game we increase our risk exposure but we present customers with a tastier fruit. Truly a slow food concept!

Natural Fertilizer

The only type of fertilizer that we use on in our cultivation is sheep manure. We have two sheep pens, where local shepherds keep their animals in exchange for the use of their manure. We fertilize our fields once a year.

Pruning

The task of pruning our trees and vines provides with fresh organic material for the ground. Once cut, the branches are mechanically ground and instead of being burnt, are used on our fields and are absorbed as a source of nourishment for the growing fruit.

Orange Processing

Our oranges do not undergo any treatment during the process of their ripening on the trees, or in the warehouse, nor do we wax their skins. They are simply washed before being boxed. We export them the same day they are harvested.

Ecological Pest Management

Biological pest control in our fields is based on the natural balance of species and their populations. We do it by introducing the respective natural enemies. Adding the appropriate species, even in small numbers, is the key to establish stability between harmful and beneficial insects. This method is highly effective and does not entail any kind of danger to the environment. Several times a year we release beneficial insects coming from the insectary in order to control those pests, such as the predator Cryptolaemus, which is used to control Cochineals.

In the event that predators are not sufficient by themselves to control pests then we complement them with natural compounds such as Bacillus Thuringiensis, fungicides based on Sulfur or Copper, mineral oils and other compounds. They are 100% natural and are authorized by the Spanish Committee on Organic Farming.
